Paramount Global, Nickelodeon and DCMP Form Multi-Year Partnership to Make Brands' Globally Beloved Kids' Programming Accessible

NEW YORK (June 24, 2024) Paramount Global and The Described and Captioned Media Program (DCMP) today announced an unprecedented partnership that ensures hundreds of hours of Nickelodeon’s hit animated and live-action series will be accessible to families with young viewers and students with disabilities. The multi-year agreement commences with several Nickelodeon series, including Bossy Bear, Tiny Chef Show, Blues Clues & You! and Santiago of the Seas and will include distribution via DCMP’s free streaming services for families and schools. Additional Nickelodeon series will be made available on DCMP’s services on a rolling basis through 2029.

DCMP's AI Scene Description Tool

DCMP operates the nation’s largest fully-accessible educational video platform, with a library of 18,000 videos designed for use by early learner through Grade 12 students with disabilities. Our development team has been working on ways to use artificial intelligence (AI) to help with accessibility challenges, including those that might be considered “impossible.” We’re excited to present “AI Scene Description,” a new tool for students who are blind and have low vision that can describe the visual elements of any frame within a paused video.

Accessible Videos and Resources for Early Learners With Visual Impairment

DCMP provides resources to support early intervention and early childhood special education for educators, families, and support personnel with children with a disability. DCMP partners with top educational content producers to add audio description to videos and make them available to families and educators who have children with a disability. How to Access Audio Description on Your TV and Through DCMP

Television, movies, and videos are made accessible to people who are blind or visually impaired through the addition of audio description. Audio description is a secondary audio track with additional narration that describes important visual information in a video. It can be accessed in a number of ways, including through your TV remote through a button or voice controls. Instructions specific to many television providers and television sets can be found at the following link on the Audio Description Project (ADP) website:

Educational Videos That Are Accessible and Bilingual

DCMP has many videos available in both English and Spanish. These videos are made accessible with high-quality captions and audio description for both languages. One special feature of our video player is the ability to make these videos bilingual. For example, a viewer may choose to play a video with English captions and Spanish audio description, and vice-versa. This may be useful for some students learning a second language, or who are bilingual but more proficient in one language.

The Audio Description Project: Promoting Accessibility for Students Who Are Blind

The BADIE contest promotes the Benefits of Audio Description in Education by inviting young people who are blind or visually impaired to view a video with audio description and write about their experience. Audio description is a secondary audio track with additional narration that describes vital visual information. The contest is hosted by the American Council of the Blind’s Audio Description Project (ADP) and the Described and Captioned Media Program (DCMP).

Emmy-Nominated Series "Kids Speak Out" Available at DCMP Through Barbara Harrison Media

DCMP is proud to partner with Barbara Harrison Media to present accessible episodes of the Emmy-nominated series Kids Speak Out to families and educators. Kids Speak Out features young people ages 6-19 from around the world speaking for themselves about the big issues they face, and this partnership will ensure that kids with disabilities are included in the conversation. The series is hosted by Emmy-winning television anchor and journalist Barbara Harrison and executive produced by Celia Straus.

First Educational Series Utilizing YouTube’s New Native Audio Description Support

SPARTANBURG, SC, August 6, 2021 – The Described and Captioned Media Program (DCMP) is excited to announce the debut of Emily Graslie’s “Art Lab,” the first educational video series on YouTube to feature audio description through a new pilot program. Audio description is a secondary audio track with additional narration that describes vital visual information for people who are blind and visually impaired.

Interactive Transcripts for Captions and Description

DCMP videos include transcripts of the caption and description files. Interactive Transcripts scroll "live" as the video plays, with words highlighted in yellow as they are captioned or spoken so that students can follow along. Interactive Transcripts are accessible by screen readers.
