Denver, CO, November 15 - In a landmark initiative set to launch on December 1st, Imagination Storybooks, previously known as Imagination Videobooks, is becoming "Imagination Storybooks by DCMP," heralding a new era of inclusivity in children's literature.

Educational Videos That Are Accessible and Bilingual

DCMP has many videos available in both English and Spanish. These videos are made accessible with high-quality captions and audio description for both languages. One special feature of our video player is the ability to make these videos bilingual. For example, a viewer may choose to play a video with English captions and Spanish audio description, and vice-versa. This may be useful for some students learning a second language, or who are bilingual but more proficient in one language.

Guide to Cable Providers and Streaming Services for People With Disabilities

This guide outlines cable, satellite, and streaming TV accessibility. It covers companies such as DirecTV, Spectrum, Netflix, and Amazon Prime. Last but not least, it touches on automated live captions to make ads, news, sports, and user-generated content more accessible.

Interactive Transcripts for Captions and Description

DCMP videos include transcripts of the caption and description files. Interactive Transcripts scroll "live" as the video plays, with words highlighted in yellow as they are captioned or spoken so that students can follow along. Interactive Transcripts are accessible by screen readers.

Nate Heck is the creator and host of the Emmy award winning program Artrageous with Nate, which we're proud to bring to our members. Nate creates high-quality, engaging educational videos, and he and his team graciously partnered with DCMP to make them accessible to kids who are blind or deaf. Nate is passionate in his belief that all children have the potential for creativity, and has been called “the Bill Nye of the art world.”

Converting YouTube SBV Subtitles to SubRip SRT Format

One of the most intriguing CIY-related developments in captioning has been Google’s automatic accessibility features for YouTube channels. Most of the buzz surrounded the auto-caption feature; based upon the speech-to-text engine that powers Google Voice, auto-caption allows individual viewers to access a machine-generated transcription of a video’s speech content, which is then automatically synchronized with the video’s sound track and displayed as individual captions. However, it is the auto-sync feature that figures to be—at least in the short term—a real game-changer for serious CIYers.

"YouTube Ready" Qualification Has Ended

The Described and Captioned Media Program (DCMP) advocates for media accessibility and provides quality standards for captioning. In 2010, DCMP partnered with YouTube to increase awareness and improve the quality of captioning on YouTube. "YouTube Ready" captioning vendors were evaluated by the DCMP, passed a review of their YouTube captioning capability, and were qualified as "YouTube Ready" captioners.
