It originated in Munich, Germany, on October 12, 1810, as a horse race to celebrate a royal wedding. The 40,000 guests had such a good time that it was held each year. Now, Oktoberfest has grown to a full street carnival, with games, performances, and parades that celebrate the customs and heritage of Germany.

During the costume and riflemen's parade, about 8,000 people wearing historical costumes march alongside horse-drawn floats. Munich's Oktoberfest is the largest street festival in the world. More than six million people come each year.

Some cities in the United States with German populations have their own Oktoberfest celebrations. Cincinnati, Ohio, holds the largest in the country, with more than 500,000 people attending. During Oktoberfest, many people, whether German or not, wear traditional costumes. Women and girls wear dirndls, while men and boys sport lederhosen.

Throughout the festival, brass bands, sometimes called oompah bands, play German folk music. And there's plenty of German food to enjoy, like pretzels, sausage, and apple strudel.
