Also called the "festival of colors" or the "festival of love," it began as an ancient Hindu celebration. Hinduism is a religion rich with legends of deities and demons. Holi celebrates the victory of Prince Prahlada over his father, a demon king, as well as the divine love of Radha for Krishna,

a Hindu deity. Holi is a two-day celebration of the goodness and fun of life. It begins at night with bonfires lit as the moon rises. These bonfires, called holika dahan, represent the defeat of the demon king. The next morning, Holi continues with bright-colored powders called gulal. Young and old alike spend the morning and afternoon throwing gulal and spraying colored water on each other. Entertainers sing, dance, and play drums. Friends and families share traditional foods and drinks, such as gujia and puran poli.

By evening, after hours of messy and colorful fun, everybody gets cleaned up, dressed up, and heads out to visit friends and relatives.
