Hi there. Mike Mulligan here. And in today's O&M Skill Refresher video, I'm gonna be demonstrating how to fold a folding white cane. So in my hand here I have a folding white cane that is actually unfolded at the moment, and I'm holding it straight up and down, or vertical. And I'm gonna demonstrate how you can fold a folding white cane. So it's pretty easy to do, but the first thing you're gonna want to do is grab onto the handle. And right now my cane, again, is vertical, straight up and down. So when I grab the handle, I actually want my thumb facing towards the ground. So my hand is gripping around the handle here, and my thumb is facing towards the ground; the cane is still vertical. And then I'm gonna use my other hand-- so that's my left hand that's holding the handle-- and I'm gonna take my right hand and follow the cane downwards-- or trace my hand down the shaft of the cane-- until I find the first joint. So I've found the first joint here, and then I'm gonna go a little bit past that. And once I've gone a little bit past that, I have one hand on one side of the joint and one hand on the other side of the joint. I'm gonna pull it apart-- so, away from each other-- so the top of the cane is going up kind of towards the ceiling and the bottom part is going towards the ground. And then I'm gonna fold it. So I have folded it over so now I have two sections in my left hand, the hand that started by holding onto the handle. So I'm gonna keep that left hand on those two sections, and I'm gonna continue doing what I've been doing. So now I'm going to take my right hand again, trace down the cane past the next joint, grab on, and then pull apart up and down, folding it so now I have three sections in my left hand. Again, I have one more section on this cane. So I'm gonna trace down, find the joint, go past that, pull the cane apart; and now my cane is completely folded. So now, after that, I want to get the elastic cord to wrap around the cane so the cane doesn't just want to open all by itself. So when doing this, the goal is to find the little loop at the end of the elastic. And depending on how old your cane is and how tight your elastic is, this can be a little bit of a challenge, stretching it over all the pieces of the folded cane. So one thing you could do is rest the cane on your belly. So right now I have one section, or part of the folded pieces, on my belly, and I'm holding that with my right hand; and with my left hand I'm holding the little loop. So my fingers are actually inside the loop, starting to spread out the loop. And after I've done that, I'm going to pull that up towards the part of the cane that's away from my belly, that's not touching my belly, while I'm spreading out that elastic loop, and I'm gonna wrap it around all the pieces of the cane. So now my cane is folded, and that little loop is holding it all together.
