Hey, everyone. Mike Mulligan here. Thank you so much for joining me today, and today I'm gonna be talking about how to hold the white cane. And for this video I will be talking about the index finger grip, also known as the standard grip. The index finger grip is the most common way to hold the cane. There are many different ways to hold the cane, but this index finger grip is the one I teach the most and most of my clients use. There are ways to modify this grip, but that'll be talked about in another video. The first thing you're going to want to do for this index finger grip is to find the handle of the cane, which is easy to find. It's at the top of the cane, normally the rubber part where the cord is coming out from on most canes. So now that I've found the handle of the cane, I'm actually going to move a little closer to the camera here. The first thing I'm gonna do is put the cane down out in front of me so now the tip of my cane is resting on the ground, facing 12 o'clock straight in front of me. So that's how I like to start this grip. And now that I have the cane out in front of me and the handle in my hand, I'm going to find the flat part of the handle. Okay, so I've found the flat part of the handle here. And once I do that, I am going to put just my index finger extended out on that flat part. So, once I have my index finger extended on that flat part, the rest comes pretty naturally. But you're going to use your other three little fingers-- wrap it around the grip, and then your thumb comes over the top. So, with index finger grip, the goal is that your thumb would be facing the ceiling like this, your index finger is extended, pointing straight in front of you down the shaft of your cane, and then the rest of your fingers are gripped around the cane. So, index finger grip's a pretty simple grip to learn, and it's helpful because the way your wrist naturally moves, this position really is ergonomically the best. It'll save your wrist from a lot of pain and issues. It does take some time to strengthen your hand when you're using this grip, but this really is probably the best way to hold the cane. Thank you so much for joining me today. I hope this video was helpful in learning how to hold the white cane using the index finger grip.
