In the 16th century, Spanish and English settlers came to colonize Hobcaw Barony. This was a dark time for the Waccamaw people, as the Spanish colonized Waccamaw land without regard of the Waccamaw culture. English Carolinian colonists raided the Spanish missions and took Waccamaw people and Africans as slaves for their plantations. These groups of people would establish themselves in the Carolina colonies, where descendants still thrive today. Daniel Littlefield joins to discuss the early history of African-Americans in the Carolina colonies. Part of the "Between the Waters" series.
