1000 BC to 900 AD is known as the “Woodland Period” of Hobcaw Barony’s history. The area of Hobcaw was inhabited by the Waccamaw Native American tribe, and the name Hobcaw means “Between the Waters” in the Waccamaw language. Leland Ferguson, Professor Emeritus of Anthropology at the University of South Carolina, archaeologist Karen Smith, and Cheryl Cail, 2nd Chief Judicial of the Waccamaw Indian People, discuss the early history of Hobcaw Barony and the process of archaeological excavation in the area. Part of the "Between the Waters" series.
