      - [Chase] This episode of The Outsiders Club was brought to you by Florida's Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. - Three, two, one. - [Together] Ah! - Oh my gosh, you guys scared me!

(laughter) - So, what are you doing? - Homework. - Ew. - Guys, it's not that bad. I'm making a bottle ecosystem. - A what? - Well, I have earthworms, crickets, and snails. - You had me at earthworms. - Today on the show, we make a bottle ecosystem. - [Together] Project Ecosystem! - [Brandon] But first, I discover a whole new world when I go bug hunting. And later, Chase heads to the Fuel Lab. Our amazing fully-stocked kitchen for a strange grilled cheese recipe. - I've never had veggies on a grilled cheese. I'm sorta curious to see how this is gonna taste. - This will be the perfect project for you, Brandon. I think you might be bug crazy! - Hey, it's not my fault. This is bug hunt. It's awesome! Check it out! Hey guys. So today we're gonna go on a bug hunt. And we're meeting up with someone who knows a lot about bugs. So, let's go meet her! Did you know that there are over a million different kinds of bugs in the world? Let's face it. Whether you like bugs or, like me, you'd rather stay out of their way, they're everywhere. And I found the best person in the world to help me hunt down some amazing creatures. So this is our bug expert, Eva, and I'm ready to go into the woods and the swamp. Right? That's what we're gonna do? - Actually, we're gonna right here in my backyard. - So, what kind of bugs are we gonna find today? - Well, we can find Monarch caterpillars, and we can also find Ladybugs. And if we're lucky, Monarch butterflies. - Cool, let's go. Eva is an expert when it comes to bugs. When she finds a new creature, she looks up everything she can find out about it. So, this is Eva's microscope. She uses this to looks at bugs she finds or carcasses of bugs and it's really cool. So, how do you use this microscope, Eva? - Well, you take whatever you are looking at and you put it under the lens. So here we have a dead bumblebee and we can look at it under the microscope. What does its hair look like? It looks like our hair a lot. - Yeah, it looks a lot like a dog's fur or something. So what can of things can you learn with this microscope? - You know when leaves stick to your sweater? - [Brandon] Yeah. - Well, when I put them under the microscope, there's little hooks and they look like glass. And that's what makes them stick. So, it's really finding the reason why things do the things they do in nature. - That's cool. So, now that I have a better understanding of insects, it's time to go bug hunting. - So, this where I like to first look for bugs. - Oh, cool. So, wait, I thought we were staying in your backyard? - We are. - Oh, okay. - Come on! - [Brandon] I'll be honest. At first, I was a little hesitant. But, Eva said she comes back here all the time. What kind of bugs do normally find over here? - Well, we sometimes find cockroaches, or some worms, maybe. - Cockroaches. Can't wait. - Sometimes you can find them up against the house. Because they like the soft dirt, so they're sometimes over here. Oh, they're not here today - [Brandon] So far, I was honestly okay with that. - I think there might be something under here. Psst.

(laughter) Oh, look at this! Look, a cockroach! - [Brandon] We found one. - [Eva] Let's get him! You hold him. I dare you. Hold it. - [Brandon] I guess these creepy-crawlies weren't so bad after all. Go free, little guy. - [Eva] Yay! - Get off me! We've been digging really deep and we found a worm. It looks pretty big. - Okay, so we grab part of it. Here's one. Here you go. - I think we might have better luck in the hobbit hole. - Wait. What's a hobbit hole? - You'll have to wait and see. - Oh. Oh, okay. You know, before I just noticed bugs when they were in my face and stuff. But after hanging out with Eva, I look at bugs a whole new way. - And these bugs are gonna have a home. - Oh, right. So, let's get back to our ecosystem. How does it work? - Well, we have plants, bugs, and even microbes. They all depend on each other in an ecosystem. - Oh, so the plants produce oxygen and the living creatures that need it breathe in the oxygen? - Exactly. We're doing that, just this smaller. - You seem to have a lot to put in this thing. Are you sure it's all going to fit? - Sure! There's going to a water and soil part. The soil is going to have some of the water in it. - So, this seems pretty easy to put together. So, this might be a code yellow. Some adult help might be needed and caution should be used with the tools involved. - [Elainena] Now we have all the materials we need for an actual ecosystem. - [Brandon] Including all the awesome creepy-crawlies. - And a few odds and ends. - Wow, a lot goes into nature, huh? - Yep. So first, Brandon, let's get these bottles cut up. - I'm still wondering if all these things are gonna fit, Elainena. - Well, we'll test that out soon. When we come back, we'll put together our own personal slice of nature. - And don't miss when Eva shows me her butterfly garden. Do you want your own Outsiders Club t-shirt? Then go to our website at theoutsidersclub.com. And get an official Outsiders Club t-shirt. - Oh yeah. - It's official. Do you wanna be a member of the Outsiders Club? It's pretty easy to join. Just go to theoutsidersclub.com, and click "Join the club." Then, get out there, enjoy the sun and have some fun, and experience everything being outside has to offer. - [Brandon] I'm here with Eva in her backyard hunting for bugs. She's taking me up close and personal to all different types of bugs. And now, it's time to check out what she calls her hobbit hole. - This is my hobbit hole. - [Brandon] As soon as we got in, we had our first find. Oh, there's a lizard. - [Eva] Oh, get him! - [Brandon] He's right there, right there. - Got him. Awesome. - [Brandon] You got a lizard. Well, a lizard is not a bug, but it is a really cool animal to catch. - Let's look under here. A toad! - You found a toad! - [Brandon] Eva told me she finds other things in the dirt besides bugs or reptiles. - I have actually found a squirrel skeleton. Oh, that's cool. - [Eva] Here is a skull of a squirrel. And, also, my favorite part, the hip joint. - [Brandon] That's cool. And you found him in this very room, right? - [Eva] Yes, I did. - Do you have any tips for people who want to catch bugs? How do you catch a bug? - First, you need to be gentle and get dirty. And, also, to have a habitat when you're done for the bug. - What's the best way to catch a bug? - The best way to catch a bug is a net. - And you made that yourself? - Yes, it's very simple. All you need is a clothes hanger, duct tape, a stick, and some thread. So here, I'll show you how to make one. - First, you take a hanger and bend it into a loop. Then, you stretch some painters cloth around the hanger to make a net. You sew the net around the hanger and then tape it to a pole. It was easy-peasy lemon-squeezy. This is a butterfly net and I think this is one of the best butterfly nets I've ever seen. Now that we've made a net, naturally, we had to test it out in the butterfly garden. So, Eva, has her own butterfly garden. So, come on, let's go check it out. What inspired you to start this whole butterfly garden? - Well, I used to love reading about them and so I want to start my own. So I could have them in my backyard and observe them closely. - So cool. Eva, what advice do you have for other kids who want to make a butterfly garden themselves? - Well, you need a good outside area and lots of milkweed. - And this is milkweed right here? - This is milkweed. - That is milkweed. - Yes. - Why do caterpillars eat this one specific plant, milkweed? - Well, the reason why they eat it is because it has a milk inside the plant which feeds the caterpillar. And it's also healthy, it's protein for them, but not for humans. Monarch caterpillars are very picky eaters.

      - So, today I made a special bug snack for our bug hunt. Ants on logs. - Cool. I'm kinda hungry. - [Eva] Spreading hummus or peanut butter on celery stalks will give you an extra boost of protein you need to keep your muscles strong. - Nature is just so amazing because it always takes us on an adventure. I found a lot of amazing and interesting bugs today. But, I also learned, that adventure can be found right in your own backyard. For more information on creating your own butterfly garden, go to our wesbsite, theoutsidersclub.com. - Eva's backyard, Brandon, looked amazing. - Yeah. My favorite part was the hobbit hole. That's where we caught the toad. - That looks pretty cool. - Yeah. - So we're halfway done with the ecosystem. We cut the bottles and started with the water hack. - Gravel went in first to weigh down the bottle. - And then we added water. And then the plant. - So, that portion's ready? - Yep. When we come back, we'll get dirty. It's time for the earth part of our ecosystem. - [Brandon] And Chase digs into some mini grilled cheeses at the Fuel Lab. - [Elainena] Are there vegetables involved? - Of course! - Yum. - Do you wanna be a member of the Outsiders Club?
