(male) If you're interested in nursing, math is incredibly important.
(Describer) Aaron Begue:
I know everyone always says, "You'll use that every day." You absolutely do, in addition to the other sciences, such as chemistry, biology, anatomy. There are many differences between a registered nurse and a nurse practitioner. The bachelor's prepared nurse is a registered nurse who has the basic training and college preparation. That lays the foundation for them progressing to the master's level if they choose to become an advanced practice nurse.
(Describer) He types at a computer.
A nurse practitioner is able to diagnose and treat patients for common illnesses and health care concerns. Additionally, they can review, interpret, and then act upon their interpretations of diagnostic tests, laboratory findings. They act independently. They are able to have their own practices, see their own patients, which can include family practice, pediatrics. It can include psychiatric mental health, adult health, and many others.
(Describer) He writes notes as a patient talks.
With today's changes in health care, advanced practice nursing is an excellent position. There's not only the opportunities to provide direct patient care, there's opportunities for administrative roles. There's opportunities for working with state and local governments, also work with hospitals and clinics that are looking to get started and build the best health care product available.
(Describer) He listens to the patient’s breathing with the stethoscope, and works at the computer again.
In high school, I was interested in the sciences. Those were where I was most successful. I volunteered at the local hospital. It helps you become more comfortable interacting with someone who's dealing with illness or a family dealing with illness. That's helped my career. The most important thing is to get a well-rounded education. Then begin with finding a mentor who has the knowledge to recognize your interest and help you get to the goals that you're setting for yourself.
(Describer) The computer is on a desk in his office, which has a chart on a wall.
As the director of advanced practice at the Wexner Medical Center, I work with all of our nurse practitioners. When you're working with individuals who want to do better than they already are, it's very rewarding because they are interested in making things better so that our patients receive the best care possible.
