According to Matt Budyka,
a transportation supervisor
at Sysco Cleveland
Incorporated,
some days can start
at 3:30 a.m.
and go into the evening.
Depending on what time
drivers are dispatched,
we do have a dispatcher
at the shop at all times
for the drivers to call
when they run into issues.
(Describer) Another man types at a computer.
There's always times where
a driver can't get into a stop,
(Describer) Someone drives a semi-truck.
alarms gets set off,
different things,
breakdowns where we secure
a vendor to fix the truck.
(narrator)
A typical day starts
with his computer.
We normally use laptops.
We have tablets, our phones,
we have different apps
to track our equipment
and our drivers,
but we'll get on the computer
and use our GPS tracking system
to see where they're at
and whether they're on time.
(narrator)
Sometimes uncontrollable things
can happen,
like heavy traffic,
an accident, or a snowstorm.
It's the transportation
supervisor's job
to be in contact right away.
(Budyka)
We see where
our problems are.
We set up where I do
observations on my drivers.
I make sure they're following
fundamental work techniques,
they're being safe on the road,
following all federally
regulated laws and regulations,
with violations, and different
things of that sort.
(narrator)
From Cleveland,
drivers cover areas
as far west as Toledo,
as far south as Cincinnati,
and even into Pennsylvania
and West Virginia.
Supervisors also
spend time on the road,
observing drivers
on their routes.
(Budyka)
I'm making sure
they're lifting properly
and maintaining the product
during the breakdown
of the pallets
and everything the warehouse
put together the night prior.
I make sure they're giving
quality service to the customers
and things of that nature.
(Describer) A driver unloads boxes.
(narrator)
He worked his way up
to get to the position
of transportation supervisor.
(Budyka)
I started as a order selector
right behind me here,
picking groceries
in the middle of the night.
(Describer) In a warehouse, a man loads packages onto a pallet.
I had no experience.
I had a high school diploma.
Came in,
started picking groceries,
and obtained my CDL
through the company.
(narrator)
A class-A CDL is
a commercial driver's license
for pulling 80,000 pounds on
regulated types of equipment,
like a tractor trailer
combination vehicle.
There are different schools
that offer training
for this license.
(Budyka)
After getting my CDL,
I drove for Sysco.
Drove for a year and a half
and came into management.
Once you have your class-A,
the possibilities are endless.
I've been exposed
to multiple things
and resources
throughout the company.
Again, I have
a high school diploma.
I don't have any university
or anything like that,
but I was able
to learn things,
and experience is what
really drives success.
(narrator)
He also believes students
interested in his field
can start preparing
while in school
by focusing on math, logistics,
and computer skills.
(Budyka)
Obviously Excel.
We do a lot of tracking.
We do a lot of measuring,
so get the computer skills
tuned up.
You have to have drive
to do something.
You gotta have interest.
I had no intentions of
ever being in this position,
and I love it.
It's something
that has driven me.
I get interested.
In the morning,
I wake up
and see how
to better the company.
(narrator)
