In the critical years after the Civil War and the death of Abraham Lincoln, Andrew Johnson, Ulysses S. Grant, and Rutherford B. Hayes were less than effective Presidents. Johnson escaped impeachment by one Senate vote, Grant's administration was corrupt, and Hayes' election was full of fraud. During these twelve years, Seward bought Alaska, the KKK was formed, Custer lost the Battle of the Little Big Horn, Jim Crow laws and segregation took hold, and technology, industry, and immigration exploded.
