Looks at the lives of two hearing-impaired Canadian women, Janice Todd and Melanie Broom, and their families. Janice gradually lost her hearing as a child. Melanie woke up at age 15 with her hearing damaged from a virus. Both lipread; they never learned sign language. Although surrounded by family and friends, they feel isolated in their silent worlds. Because both have nerve deafness, they qualify as candidates for cochlear implants. Follows how they get tested and then make the decision to get cochlear implant surgery. Shows how they "learn to hear" again. NOTE: Shows film footage of cochlear implant surgery.
