In the mid-1800s, thousands of Chinese immigrated to the United States and settled near San Jose, California, in an area known as Chinatown. In the depression of 1887, many people blamed the Chinese for taking their jobs, and burned Chinatown to the ground. Independent landowner John Heinlen donated money to rebuild Chinatown, and the new community became known as Heinlenville. While Heinlenville no longer exists, there is an effort to preserve its landmarks as part of Chinese-American culture.
