In this segment of The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer, correspondent Betty Ann Bowser looks at the implications of cochlear implant technology on the Deaf community. Shows two families; one is a hearing family who has a deaf child with an implant; the other is a deaf family whose deaf child does not have an implant. Addresses the question: Does technology have the potential to wipe out deaf culture? Includes interviews with Dr. John Niparko, director of The Listening Center at Johns Hopkins and I. King Jordan, president of Gallaudet University.
