- [Announcer] The Outsiders Club is brought to you by Florida State Parks. Visit floridastateparks.org to plan your next adventure in the real Florida. - I have one canoe for four hours. That's gonna be $20. - Oh, here's 10. - Uh. Lemme see what I got here. Okay, how 'bout $3 and a homemade bracelet? - Hey, you owe me seven bucks. Hello, and welcome to The Outsiders Club. I'm Selah. And I'm Brandon, and today, we're in North Florida at Florida Caverns State Park. - Today, we're canoeing on the Chipola River, which runs straight through this beautiful state park. Hey, gimme the paddles, and I'll set up the canoes while you tell 'em about the park. - Great idea! Oo, where do I begin? Well...
(upbeat music) Florida Caverns State Park is a 1,300-acre park located just northwest of Tallahassee. Believe me, this is a beautiful part of Florida. Large timber forests, rolling hills, very un-Florida, you might say. Wow. This park's main attraction is, of course, the underground caverns that you can actually take tours in, a must-see when you get here. Some added wow factor is the Chipola River, and if I were a river judge, I'd score this one like a 20 out of 10. And that score doesn't even make sense! That's how great it is, winding, full of wildlife, clear water, just and all-around awesome river. Park TTDs include camping, horseback riding, fishing, swimming, bicycling and, of course, canoeing. Multi-use trails near the campgrounds offer six miles of exploration for hikers, bicyclists and horseback riders in the woodlands along the Chipola River. - Oh, there you are. I think we're all set. - Okay, just let me check the list. - No, do we really need the list? - Selah, never underestimate the power of the list. - Okay, let's just get this over with so we can go canoeing. - While Selah may think this is an inconvenience, the list is actually a really helpful tool. First item on the list, canoe. - Duh. - Paddles? - Yup. - Waterproof bag? - Uh huh. - Water shoes? - Check. - Life jackets? - Uh huh. - Sunscreen? - Yes. - Bug repellent? - We got it. - Gummy bears? Oh, that's embarrassing. I don't even know how that got in there. River map? - Yeah. - Water? - Yup. - Food? - Yup. - Hat? - Um hmm. - [Brandon] Hair emergency kit? - Wait, what is a hair emergency kit? - Hair emergency kit, ever heard of it? - No. Listen, we got all the things on your list. Let's go canoeing! - Okay, okay, okay. While we're about to shove off, check out fellow outsider Chloe as she goes on a wild and crazy airboating adventure.
(rock music) - [Chloe] Hey outsiders. I am so excited to go on my first airboat ride today. I can't wait to take a bunch of pictures and see some wildlife, and I'm kinda nervous 'cause I've never been on airboat ride yet, but I think it'll be a lot of fun. Oh my gosh, that's a gator!
(gator growling) I guess the wildlife already came to us. There's a gator right there just hangin' out. I can tell, this is gonna be a really cool day. I'm supposed to meet this guy Austin. Nice to meet you, I'm Chloe. - I'm Austin. Welcome to Wild Florida. Hi, my name's Austin, and my parents own Wild Florida. Wild Florida is a world-class airboat tour and gator park. The thing about Wild Florida is that we have animals and airboats, and that's what we're gonna do today. - When I first got on the boat, Austin handed me these earmuffs or headphones, and I had no clue what to do with them. - Let's do this. - But the second he cranked the engine, I knew exactly what those were for. Believe me, an airboat is really loud.
(rock music) - I'm excited because Chloe has never been here before or on an airboat, and we're gonna have some fun. - I brought my camera with me today, and one thing I'm really excited about is getting up close and personal with some really cool wildlife.
(peppy music) We saw lots of cool wildlife on the way, like a couple of nice birds and stuff, but I really freaked out when I saw the 10-foot, massive alligator. - [Austin] All of a sudden, there it is, a huge, 10-foot alligator. Chloe was like so excited. - Oh my gosh look how big he is. - Shh, quiet, quiet, quiet. You don't want to scare him. - Yeah, you're right. I'll just get a picture. Austin, do you see him? - [Austin] Yeah, I said it's huge! - Oh my gosh, his tail goes all the way back. You can see it behind an exhibit and experience it, but there's nothin' like seeing that beast in person. - Oh my word, that is huge. - Oh this one's awesome. - That is like a prehistoric dinosaur-- - [Chloe] Have you ever seen one bigger than this one? - No. That's as big as they get, man. That is huge. - Oh, that's crazy. Can't believe I saw it on my first time. - [Austin] I know, seriously. - I was amazed at how close we got to this alligator. I mean, he was right there in front of my eyes. - He's not afraid of this 4,000 pound airboat. I think he's like, did you hear that hiss? - Yeah. - He's tryin' to defend his territory. - He just wants to stay there. - He's like this is my spot, get outta here, that's what he wants. - He actually seems kind of chill with us. - I know. - I started to get a little nervous when I realized that he was hissing at us.
(alligator hissing) Austin educated me on that's how they claim their territory and basically warn you to take a few steps back. After a while, he just kind of slowly sank to the bottom.
(country music) - [Narrator] Hey, don't go away. - Oh, I think I got one! Okay, awesome! - That's a big one. - Awesome.
(energetic music) - Brandon! Brandon! (screams) - Uh. My hair.
(energetic music) - I'm so excited to go on my first airboat ride today. We saw lots of cool wildlife on the way, but I really freaked out when I saw the 10-foot, massive alligator. Austin, do you see him? - [Austin] Yeah, he is huge. - [Chloe] Oh my gosh, his tail goes all the way back. And then right after, when I thought the trip couldn't get any better, Austin took me to this really cool place for fishing.
(rock music) Yeah, it was crazy, and we were going so fast at that one part. It feels like you're on a roller coaster. - Seriously. Hey, Chloe, you wanna go explore? - Yeah, can I bring my fishing pole? - Heck yeah. - Oh, awesome. - When we got off the boat, I was looking forward to showing Chloe my favorite fishing spot. - We spotted stuff earlier, maybe we can see some more stuff now. Austin took me to his favorite spot, and I could totally understand why. The view was absolutely breathtaking. So why do you love being outside so much? - I love being outside because that's where all the animals are, and it's like their adaptations are almost like superpowers to me. - Oh, I think I got one! - [Austin] Oh man, seriously, oh my! Aw, you're so lucky! - Wait, I almost got it, I almost got it! - [Austin] Don't let it snag, man, don't let it snag. - I won't, I won't. - Oh man, that's a big one. - Awesome! - I was helping Chloe with her fish, and I just fell in. - Yeah, that's great. - Water in the boots, it's not fun. - What kind of fish is this again? - Bluegill. - Awesome. Let's try again. Oh, it's a massive one. (laughing) - [Austin] It's gotta be a bass. - So, I grabbed my fishing rod, we went out there, and believe it or not, I caught two fish. I mean, they weren't that big, but I still caught two fish. Now I've got two.
(upbeat music) Today was my first airboat ride, and let me tell ya, I had an absolute blast. If you've never been on an airboat before, it's the perfect way to go see Florida's wildlife. Let me show you about the boat. It's made out of aluminum, and it has a really flat bottom, so not only can it go over super-shallow waters, but it can go on land too. And it has an engine that you wouldn't expect from a boat like this. Lemme show you. Okay, so here's the engine. I mean, just look at it! It's massive, and it's like in this big cage. It makes a ton of noise, and it looks like a giant fan that just propels you over the water. This is what the key is to going over really shallow waters. It kind of reminds me of like an airplane engine, and not only is the airboat super cool, but it's also super fun.
(country music) Come over here, let me show you how you steer the airboat. Okay, this is the driver's seat. I'm not sure if I'm allowed up here, but you guys have the inside access. Now this is the really cool part I was talking to you guys about. Look, there's no steering wheel. There's nothing for me to grab onto except this. When you move forward, it steers you left, and then when you move it back, it steers you right. And then how do I end up making it go? Well, there's a really cool gas pedal right here, and I just push down on that, and then we're gonna take off.
(upbeat music) - One of my favorite things to do is showing people about wild Florida. - What a great day I had today. I learned so much about the wildlife from Austin, I caught a couple of fish, I got some good photos in, and I went on my very first airboat ride. And if you guys have never done it, I highly recommend it, because it's the perfect way to go out and see Florida's wildlife. Whether you're on an airboat or just hiking with some of your friends, I wanna encourage you to go outside and experience wild Florida.
(lively music)
(Selah laughing) - All right, now we're off. - [Selah] Okay, before we move too far, let's review some canoeing for dummies. First, let's ID the parts of the canoe. Here's the bow or the front. There's the stern or the back, and then you have the hull or, basically, the bottom part that keeps you afloat. And here's a few parts of the all-important paddle, without this sucker, you aren't going anywhere. So yeah, this is your best friend. Here's the blade, and here's the grip. And the last thing is your life jacket. Make sure it fits and is on correctly. Canoes can tip over, so you want to throw your life jacket on before, not after, that happens. But that's not gonna happen today, right, Brandon? - What are you talkin' about? - Oh, you've forgotten, well, I haven't. You tipped the canoe last time! - Wait, it's starting to come back to me. Yes, okay, I got it. You tipped over the canoe when you were getting in. - What? - That was a very important lesson we learned that day. So here's what we learned not to do. Whatever you do, don't park your canoe half on land and half in the water. - Brandon, don't! - And as you can see, this creates a very tippy situation. - Brandon! (screams) Brandon! - Hey, that's how you learn. Oh yeah, I remember now. My hair was really tweaked that day, and that's when I decided to add the hair emergency kit to the list. We were destined to go in that day. Well, that's how not to do it. Here's the proper way. Position the canoe first so the stern is near the shore, then push the canoe out so most of it's floating. The person sitting in the bow gets in first. They should hold the boat steady while the other person steps into the boat. They should crouch low and grab the sides of the canoe to balance their weight. Then slowly make your way to the bow and sit down and grab your paddle. Once they are settled, you should put your foot into the center of the canoe and then push off of the shore with your other foot while keeping both hands on both sides of the canoe. Lower yourself into the seat, and voila, you're both in and ready to paddle. - One more tip, you need to decide who sits where. The more experienced paddler should sit in the back. That's me, of course, because they'll be doing all the steering. The person sitting in the bow just needs to paddle, have fun and get splashed, of course. - Hey, no, no, no. Not the hair, not the hair! Hey! - Check this out, become a Florida State Park Junior Ranger and have the opportunity to learn, serve and share state park natural and cultural resources. Learn how at floridastateparks.org, and remember, keep it outside. - [Narrator] Hey, don't go away. - [Girl] Like a pro. - Thanks. Very majestic. - So amazing, woo, horseback riding!
(energetic music)
(energetic music) - So today we're at a real working ranch, and I'm so excited 'cause they've got tons of animals here. I found someone who's gonna teach me how to ride a horse. You just gotta be careful where you're walking. Horseback riding is something more of a recreational sport, and you can start riding horses at around five years old. This is Meg. She's 12 years old, and she's been riding horses for five years! So why did you start riding horses? - My mom took me to this carnival before, and there was like this ring of horses, and so kids just kinda get on them and walk around. So I got to try that, and I really just loved it. - I have ridden a horse before, but it's nothing like this. Do you have any tips or tricks that might make it easier for me? - All you have to do, really, is just kind of relax when you're around them. Don't act nervous or anything. - Don't get nervous? Okay. I'm not gonna fall. You're not gonna run too fast. We're gonna be great, deal? Okay, deal.
(western music) Ugh! Very majestic. Yeah, I don't think I'm there yet. I'm gonna start a little slower. Meg and I rode around the riding rink to help us get used to our horses before we hit the trail. It's kind of cool to be up this high. I mean, you can see everything differently here. With Karen and Meg's helpful tips, I was riding my horse like a pro! - You're doing it, Daja! - Yay, I'm doing it! Wait, wait, stop! - [Meg] (laughing) Turn her! - How do I stop? - The most important part, to stop, you're gonna pull back with both hands nice and evenly toward your waist. - [Meg] Pull to your waist! - Uh, that was fun but nerve-racking all at the same time. I stopped the horse, guys. To the waist, not to the face. I know how this looks. - [Meg] Keep going, little bit more. - [Daja] But I am getting the hang of this. - [Meg] There ya go! - Okay, what's the plan for today? - We're just gonna go out and try to find some trails and see what looks interesting. - All right, I'm excited. You excited? - Yeah, let's do this. - Let's do it! - [Meg] Isn't this fun? - [Daja] Yeah, it's really fun. - [Meg] It looks really nice out. - So we're out here in natural Florida riding a horse, and the views out here are amazing. And it's way more fun that you could do it on a horse, right? - Yeah, it's way better than just seeing it through a window. - Or a computer screen. - [Meg] That's true. - [Daja] As Meg and I rode our horses along the trail, I began to realize how cool it is to experience the great outdoors while riding a horse. Everything out here's up high. Because you're sitting much higher on the horse, you get a totally different perspective of nature. Even the bushes, we probably couldn't be able to see over them if we were standing up, right, Meg? - [Meg] Right. - [Daja] We go through this? - [Meg] Yeah. - Good girl. This is so cool! While riding along the trail, we found a lot of cool things! We found this panther pit filled with bones. Is this where the gator is? We even saw an alligator. Holy cow, he's huge! So it seems that Baxter is scared of tortoises. We learned this the hard way. By the end of our journey, I was starting to get the hang of horseback riding with Baxter. It really takes time to learn how to ride a horse, because, like humans, each horse is different, and the best part is making a new friend. Now that Baxter and I are buddies, I've decided I have got to come back. And I couldn't have done it without the help of Karen and Meg, who taught me so much about horseback riding. This is something I will definitely be doing again. So amazing, woo, horseback ridng!
(lively music) - Okay, we've all heard our parents tell us that the most important meal of the day is breakfast. Well, this time, they're actually right. When you start your day off with a non-nutritious breakfast, and hey, I admit, that stuff is good and easy to eat, you start your day off in slow motion, and that's not good. And if you want to get a closer look, don't forget to bring your binoculars. Oh. Slowly get out. Okay. Hold the canoe. There you go.
