Hi, it's me, Mr. J, and welcome to today's drawing challenge. Do you have a couple minutes? Because today's challenge is to draw a plant with a face. So grab something to draw with and something to draw on, and let's do this.
(Describer) A title: Drawing with Mr. J. In a sketch, a smiling man wears glasses. In a room decorated with drawings, he holds a pen.
[cheery music]
There's lots of different types of plants-- trees, bushes, flowers, grandma's house plants, cacti. See, for me, I oftentimes draw based off of how I'm feeling, and earlier today, I was feeling a little bit prickly. You know, like a cactus. So I'm gonna draw a cactus with a face. I'm gonna start with a plant pot 'cause that's where the cactus is. So I'm gonna go up and make my cactus and his two little arms.
(Describer) Like a tall, rounded rectangle with arms.
And a cactus is pretty prickly, just like I was feeling. So we need to add on his little needles.
(Describer) Short lines around the edges, and a few in the front.
Couple here and there. All right. Oh! I spent all this time worried about my cactus and drawing his little needles, I forgot to draw its face. So--hmm. Let me think about this. A face really shows a whole lot of emotion, doesn't it? So, like, when the eyebrows go down like this, we look grumpy. When they're up like this, we look really surprised. So for my cactus, I kind of need a little bit of a grumpy-looking face, don't I? So I'm gonna draw his little eyeballs, and then I guess his eyebrows need to kind of go down.
(Describer) Slanted down toward the middle.
Oh, yeah, he's feeling a little bit grumpy.
(Describer) He adds a zigzag mouth. The animated sketch of Mr. J. reappears.
So let's check in. How do we know when we're feeling prickly or maybe just out of sorts? How do you know when someone else is feeling out of sorts too? Where would you see that in someone's face? Does the shape of their mouth turn into a frown? How about their eyebrows? Do they get bunched up and turn down too? And what about their eyes? Maybe they stare off into space or look angry. And if you feel out of sorts, does your skin feel a little prickly? Like a cactus?
(Describer) The sketch of Mr. J. mimics the grumpy face on the cactus drawing.
Earlier, when I was feeling prickly, I felt grumpy. When people would talk to me, I didn't want to talk to them. I just needed to spend some time alone to calm down, to feel better, some quiet time, and even to do some drawing, a lot like we're doing right now. See, I think that's the first step with emotions and feelings, is realizing we're having them, and how does it feel in our body when we're feeling happy or sad or definitely prickly? So after we've realized that, what do we do with it? Do we need to talk to somebody? Do we need some time alone? Do we need to draw?
(Describer) Mr. J. holds up his "prickly" drawing and grins.
Thank you so much for joining me for today's drawing challenge. And I hope that this has given you an opportunity to not only draw a cool plant with a face, but to also learn and talk about your feelings. Make sure to talk about them with someone you know. All right, well, I look forward to seeing you next time.
