(Describer) A title: Drawing with Mr. J. In a sketch, a smiling man wears glasses. At a picnic table, he sits with colorful sticky-note pads.

      [upbeat music]

Hey, it's me, Mr. J., and I like to draw. Do you know why I like to draw? Because it helps me to make sense of how I'm feeling, because emotions are confusing. Some feelings make me feel really energized or relaxed, and some feelings make me uncomfortable. Do you feel like that sometimes? Feelings like happy or excited seem easy, but when I get nervous or uncertain or angry, I feel itchy or hot, and I don't like that.

(Describer) He draws slanted eyebrows and a frowning mouth.

There are so many emotions to experience, and you're allowed to have all of them, because even the ones we don't like are clues that tell us about what's going on in our lives. If we're happy and carefree, that means we're in a good place with our family and friends, but if we're angry or frustrated, these feelings might be information about an area for growth in our lives, and growing means we get better. So here's a true story. One time, quite a while ago, I was so angry at my parents because they wouldn't let me go spend time with my friends. Ooh, I was mad, but they're my parents, and I love them, and being angry with them made me feel very confused. How could I love my parents but also be angry with them at the same time? That is so hard. I cried and stomped my feet, and I didn't know what else to do. I sat by myself, and then I started drawing. I made little drawings of my friends and rain clouds and faces with all kinds of emotions. Then I talked with my parents about all the feelings I was having. They said they understood that I was angry, but I could go over to my friend's house at another time, because we were going to visit my grandparents. Anger and love let me grow a little bit and learn to be more responsible.

      (Describer) He draws smiling fruit.

It's important to learn how to name what you're feeling.

      (Describer) A smile.

      Happy.

      (Describer) A frown.

      Sad.

      (Describer) Furrowed brow.

Confused. Prickly. [laughs] There's a good one. Disappointed. Nervous. Angry. Joyful. They're all yours, and they're all clues,

      (Describer) A grinning pineapple.

and if words are hard to find, pick up something to draw on and something to draw with, and draw out what you're feeling. Then take your drawing to a parent or trusted adult and talk about it. They'll help you see that feelings are clues to help us grow and make sense of our world. I'm Mr. J., and I look forward to seeing you for our next drawing challenge.
