Hi, it's me, Mr. J., and welcome to today's drawing challenge. Do you have a couple minutes? Because today's challenge is a fruit dance party. So grab something to draw on and something to draw with, and let's do this.
[upbeat music]
(Describer) A title: Drawing with Mr. J. In a sketch, a smiling man wears glasses. In a room decorated with drawings, he holds a pen.
There are a lot of different kinds of fruit, and they're each incredibly unique, but a lot of them also have kind of like a circle look to 'em, kind of like, maybe, an orange or an apple. Kind of looks like a heart. Mm, maybe a banana.
(Describer) He draws a crescent shape.
I wonder what kind of fruit you'll draw. Well, here are my simple fruit, but those don't really look like fruit at a dance party, do they? So we need to make sure that we give them little legs and arms. This apple is really excited.
(Describer) The apple's arms reach high into the air.
And here's some legs for our banana.
(Describer) All three fruits have arms and legs.
Hmm. But they don't really look like they're having a whole lot of fun, do they? So let's add their faces, their expressions, and show their feelings. So if I make his little closed eyes like that,
(Describer) Little rainbow-shapes.
that orange looks pretty excited, doesn't it?
(Describer) He adds a smile.
Or maybe the apple...
(Describer) Adding eyelashes and a grin.
like that, and the banana's having a whole lot of fun, too, and to make sure they have movement, let's add in some motion lines.
(Describer) Like quotation marks around their hands and feet.
Yeah.
(Describer) The animated sketch of Mr. J. reappears.
So let's check in. How do we know when we're happy? How do you know when someone else is happy? Where do you see happy in someone's face? Is it in the shape of their mouth? Do their lips turn up in a smile? How 'bout their eyes? Do they close their eyes shut or open them wide? Or maybe they do both out of sheer excitement. And what about eyebrows? Are they up or down? And if someone is so happy they can't sit still and just have to dance, how does that feel, and what does that look like?
(Describer) In his drawing, the orange, apple, and banana seem to dance together.
Yeah, those fruit are really having a whole lot of fun, but you know what? Each of them are incredibly unique and different. I bet the orange dances quite differently than the apple or the banana, and that's true for us too. I know that when I dance, I dance kind of goofy, and sometimes I'm afraid to dance around other people until I realize that it's so much more fun to show my emotions and have fun with other people and dance along with them. Maybe you're feeling joyful, like the apple, or maybe you're nervous, like me, when it's time to dance with other people. Well, what you can do is have a conversation about your feelings, the things that you're experiencing, with your parent or a trusted adult or even your friends, and a great way to start that conversation is share your drawing with them. Each of our fruit dance parties could look quite different, so here's mine.
(Describer) Mr. J. holds up his "Fruit Dance Party" drawing and grins.
Thanks for joining me today as we drew a fruit dance party. I look forward to seeing you next time for another drawing challenge.
