Sam: As you get ready to graduate from high school, it is important to know the meaning of the word "accommodations," what they are, and how you get them. Accommodations are things that allow people equal access. Because no two deaf or hard-of-hearing people are the same, we may need different accommodations to get that equal access. It is a little sticky because an accommodation has to give you equal access, but it's not supposed to give you more. It is important to know what kinds of accommodations you need in high school, college, or work. Brooke: The reason we get accommodations is because there are laws that protect people from discrimination. In elementary through high school, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act-- or IDEA--is the law that tells states and school districts what they are required to provide. Accommodations are supposed to be custom fit to each individual's unique needs. All deaf and hard-of-hearing people are not the same, and we might want different accommodations.
