Brooke: I can see now that getting to know yourself is really important. It's the first step in figuring out the kind of life you want. Sam: Right, because we are all unique. We have different personalities, strengths, and values. We all have different dreams and different things that we want. I like to think about my dreams in two categories. One category is for school and my future career. The other category is personal-- where I want to live, my relationships and travel, that kind of thing. Brooke: Cool. So I'm curious, Are your dreams the same as your goals? Sam: No, not really. For me, dreams come before goals. When I dream, I think big and think about all that is possible. Once I decide I really want something and I'm willing to work for it, then it becomes a goal. Goals take commitment. To achieve your goals, you have to roll up your sleeves and work hard for them to become reality. They don't just happen. Brooke: I agree, they just don't happen. I thought they did. You know that after I graduated, my dream was to live on my own, and I did for a short time, but I got laid off, and now, I'm back at home. I didn't realize how my dream categories were connected to my school and work goals. My school and work goals have to give me enough money to support my personal goals. Sam: Yeah, it is cool how they are connected.
