(Describer) Against a blue background with a circle and triangle, title: Teen Kids News.

(male narrator) This report is brought to you by a grant from...

(Describer) In an animation, someone draws a boy with a speech bubble that says “tobacco”, then a Stop sign over three cigarettes, and a girl with a speech bubble saying, “Just not cool.”

      (Describer) Different photos are shown.

(narrator) President Bill Clinton, singers Eminem and Pink, basketball player Dennis Rodman, and actress Jessica Alba. What do they have in common? They're all famous. They all have money. I'm not sure. Did they graduate from Georgetown?

(narrator) Actually, they all have asthma.

      (Describer) Pediatrician Deepa Camenga:

Asthma's a lung disease, which causes the airways-- breathing tubes in your lungs-- to become inflamed. When inflamed, they become small. It becomes harder for air to reach your lung.

(narrator) That's called an asthma attack, and it's not pleasant. People who have asthma experience wheezing-- air having trouble getting into your lungs. They feel short of breath, like it's hard to breathe. They can feel some chest pain.

      (Describer) Scott:

So what's the connection between asthma and smoking?

      (Describer) Chris Carroll, MD:

If you smoke when you have asthma, that's worse. It can trigger an attack.

(Scott) In fact, Dr. Carroll says, it can be deadly. If you have asthma, you shouldn't start smoking. If you smoke and have asthma, quit soon. You are taking your life into your hands smoking if you have asthma.

(Scott) Here's something you need to know. If you don't have asthma, and you're not a smoker, if you're around a lot of secondhand smoke-- breathing other people's cigarette smoke-- that increases your chance of developing asthma in the future and having asthma attacks too. Smoking is bad, but is especially bad if you have asthma. Even if you don't, just being around those who smoke could trigger an asthma attack. Simply, when it comes to being able to breathe, smoke is no joke.
