(Describer) Title: Industrial Designer

My name is Don MacRostie. I do product design for Stewart MacDonald. Stewart MacDonald is a company that sells products to people who build and repair guitars. We supply most anything they might need. People all over the world send us things they want us to carry in the catalog. We test it and make sure it does what it's supposed to and it's a benefit to people who are building. And we develop products from ideas, which--largely tools-- little specialized tools to do things-- specialized for musical instruments. Out of high school, I went to University of Florida. Got a--basically a general studies degree, but emphasis on math. I was a mathematics major. So, I'm basically a problem solver. And what musical instrument repair and building is is solving problems. And every time it's something different. The design project-- designing Stewart MacDonald tools particularly-- it's--this is what we want to get done. How do we make something that's clean, simple,

(Describer) He tests a clamp on his desk.

that does its job. This is a Dremel tool and an existing base, but we're turning it into a plunge-type base. There's a lot of little pieces in here that make it work or don't work.

(Describer) He sets the small power tool aside.

So making prototypes and refining the process.

(Describer) He holds a mandolin.

Building instruments is something I'm driven to do. I can't escape it. Once I started tinkering with instruments and playing, it was like, how can I get this into my life? When you're busy doing other things-- your job and this and that-- you have to wedge it in places. Once I started with Stewart MacDonald-- so now it's all in my life and it's full time. I think-- I always tell my kids that, "Find something you really love to do, and pursue that because success will come from that." That's what I would tell school kids is find a thing that they really like-- if it's designing products, if it's working with some bicycles or guitars-- something that they really enjoy doing, you know, follow that path.
