Molly arrives in the Pastures at age 19 and interviews for a teaching position. She meets and boards with the Whiteside's. While living with them, she reveals her early life was filled with sorrow and poverty especially after her father died in an accident. Molly never believes her father is dead, but no one will listen to her. At a school board meeting, she overhears a member discuss a drunk he has hired as a handyman. As Molly listens to the description of the man, she realizes it's her father. Based on the short story by John Steinbeck.
