In 1986, Ometepe Island in Nicaragua and Bainbridge Island in Washington State united in sisterhood to mutually benefit their communities. Initiatives such as the creation and sale of calendars by American children, the production and marketing of organic coffee by adults from both islands, the access to clean drinking water, and student exchanges have helped develop closer ties between the cities while promoting the well-being of their citizens. Narrations and interviews detail the successful cooperative projects.
