Still image from The Forgotten Root (Spanish)

This documentary traces the origin of Mexico's commonly overlooked African population and shows the influence that African culture has had on the states of Guerrero, Oaxaca, Campeche, Morelos, and Veracruz. Included are excerpts from an interview with "the father of Afro-Mexican studies," anthropologist Gonzalo Aguirre Beltrán. The "forgotten root," or African influence, is an integral part of the Mexican identity.
