Looks at Nat Turner's slave rebellion in 1831 and the multiple ways in which it has been remembered and interpreted by historians, novelists, dramatists, and artists. Evaluates the authenticity of the earliest source, "The Confessions of Nat Turner," assembled by a white Virginia lawyer from jailhouse interviews. Examines how the publication of William Styron's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, also entitled "The Confessions of Nat Turner," provoked a bitter intellectual race battle in the 1960s. Intersperses documentary footage and interviews with dramatizations of different versions of the story.
