Tom Oakley is a cantankerous widower who, at the start of World War II, finds his life changed when Willie Beech, a ten-year-old evacuee from London, is forced to live with him. A strong bond develops between the pair. However, his mother summons him back to the terrors of blitz-torn London. Tom, aware of the nightmare that awaits the boy, is forced to act to save the child and has to fight to keep him. Based on the novel by Michelle Magorian.
