Did you know that dancers can make drums speak? In “My Way—Bomba!,” Eva Nicole, a 9-year-old Puerto Rican girl, invites us to a studio in the Bronx where she and her friends at Bombazo Dance Co. show us how to dance Bomba. In this traditional dance, created by enslaved Africans brought to Puerto Rico, dancers wear long skirts that they can move, along with their heads, shoulders, arms, and hips, to make drummers play in specific patterns. Eva Nicole talks about the history of Bomba, how the dance works, and how Bomba connects her to her culture and makes her feel.
