(describer) Imagination Storybooks presents. "Dogfish Stands Up to Bullying," written by Rita Reed, narrated by Erin Rieman. Audio description narrated by Tristan Snyder, and written by Miriam Snyder from illustrations by Craig Cartwright. On the cover, near a rocky freshwater floor, an orange animal with the head of a dog, long floppy ears, a black nose, big blue eyes, and long black whiskers floats on its back. Its long sparkling tail floats near a plant. One of its flippers instead of front paws lies near a pink dolphin. The pink dolphin smiles up at the orange animal. A small red lobster crawls on a rock near a plant by the pink dolphin's tail.
(narrator) Swimming up the Amazon River, Dogfish wagged his tail with glee, excited to start his new school year at Rainforest Elementary.
(describer) A signpost sticks in the ground. A yellow sign with four fish swimming on it stands on top. "School crossing." Behind it, a big green snake with brown spots and a yellow belly, an anaconda, slithers on the ground between tall plants. A small orange lobster crawls on a rock.
(narrator) He arrived bright and early before class the first day, ready for new friends to laugh with, sing and play.
(describer) A big red schoolhouse stands at the end of a path. A red crab crawls on the path. Two purple snails slide on the path followed by two turquoise eels. Dogfish swims above the eels wearing a purple backpack. Three blue fish head toward the schoolhouse. A flag on top of the schoolhouse waves over a sign. On the sign: "Rainforest Elementary." Dogfish sits on a blue swing on a red swing set. He swings up high. A purple snail swings next to him. They smile. The anaconda slithers behind them. A green fish with blue spots swims nearby.
(narrator) While swinging on the playground, gleefully swaying up high, Dogfish heard a whimper that grew into a cry. He peeked around a corner, surprised when he saw a beautiful pink dolphin curled into a tiny ball. Dolphin opened her eyes, tearful as she blinked, "I'm tired of being teased just because I'm pink."
(describer) Dogfish looks around the corner. He gapes. Dolphin lies curled in a small ball. Tears drip from her eye. Her pink tail lies up by her long nose and mouth. A small blue fish watches.
(narrator) "Anaconda is a bully, so mean and oh so rude. "He makes fun of my color. He has a bad attitude." "Let's go tell a teacher or trusted adult. I'll help you with this problem," Dogfish said. "Bully trouble can be very difficult!"
(describer) Dogfish cups Dolphin's chin in his left flipper. His right flipper pats her head. Three yellow and orange striped worms watch from nearby rocks and plants.
(narrator) Mrs. Wiggle Worm took roll call as they all settled down. "I heard there was trouble today on the playground."
(describer) Mrs. Wiggle Worm, a blue striped worm with big round glasses and yellow hair, sits at a desk in front of a chalkboard. She smiles at her class.
(narrator) "It's important for me to know "if anyone needs help. "Sometimes problems are too hard to handle all by ourselves. "Bullies have more power if they think no one knows. "Would someone like to share? How about you in the back row?"
(describer) Students sit on rocks in three rows of desks. A lobster in the back row holds up a claw. A gray fish next to it gape. In the second row, animals smile. From left to right: a green turtle, a purple and orange snail, an orange and yellow stripped worm, and a blue and brown snail. In the front row, Dogfish sits next to a teal eel. They grin.
(narrator) The small slimy snails slithered forward. "We don't like being teased," they all peeped and squeaked.
(describer) A thought balloon floats from three snails, one blue and brown, one purple and orange, and one yellow and green. In the balloon, Anaconda wraps around the purple and orange snail.
(narrator) "Anaconda is a big, mean snake. "He's older and not very nice. He bullies us while we play." The piranhas swam forward, "Yes, something must be done." Their feelings rose up in bubbles. "Anaconda should be kind to everyone. "He says we look mean because of our sharp teeth. "We're just little omnivores. "We do eat meat, but we also love fruit, "nuts, and seeds. "We're doing our job in the river to keep things nice and clean."
(describer) Anaconda slithers between plants. The school of blue piranhas with their sharp teeth watch a piranha chomp on an apple. Three red hearts float above one of the piranhas.
(narrator) Mrs. Wiggle Worm smiled, "I'm glad you're speaking up and using your words. We all have feelings that need to be heard."
(describer) Mrs. Wiggle Worm points to faces drawn on the chalkboard. In an arc starting on the left: a grinning face, a smiley face, a face with a straight mouth, a frowny face, and a frowning face with brows knit together.
(narrator) At lunchtime, they decided to ask Anaconda to apologize.
(describer) The animals swim through the playground. The eel and dolphins swim next to Dogfish. The snails ride on Dogfish's back. The lobster rides on Dolphin's back. The piranhas swim in front of the eel and Dogfish. Two green fish with their mouths in an O swim behind. A snapping turtle crawls.
(narrator) But when they found him, they were quite surprised. Anaconda was being bullied by Big Alligator who was twice his size.
(describer) A green alligator sits on the ground and rubs its yellow belly with clawed, webbed hands. It grins a toothy grin. A green tree frog with yellow hands sits on a plant behind it. Three blue fish swim by.
(narrator) "I can't help it if I hiss," Anaconda cried. "It's hard for me to say things right."
(describer) Anaconda coils between plants. His green scales turn blue. He whistles music notes. Two purple fish swim above him. Green and blue plants grow around him. He frowns.
(narrator) Friends join together in one voice. "Please stop being mean and make a better choice."
(describer) Otters sit on a rock wall with signs, a red stop sign, a yellow diamond think sign, and a green, round act sign. The otters smile. A yellow fish smiles and swims.
(narrator) Big Alligator walked away. Together, they were strong on that very first day.
(describer) Big Alligator struts away. A crab lifts its claws and grins.
(narrator) Mr. Catfish was visiting today. He was a wise and gentle soul.
(describer) A big gray fish with long whiskers wiggles in a cloud of dirt.
(narrator) He gurgled and purred. "Let's talk about words and how they make you feel inside. "Words can make us happy, but can also make us cry. "If someone makes you mad, "count to ten and take a rest. "Then you can share your feelings with words you think are best." Anaconda slowly slithered to the front of the class.
(describer) The students sit at their desks smiling.
(narrator) "I'm so sorry. "I was bullying you because it was done to me. "Today, you've all helped me learn to use kind words and stop being mean."
(describer) With his tongue out, Anaconda frowns. He looks down.
(narrator) Suddenly Anaconda became brighter. His green began to shine.
(describer) His blue scales turned back to green. They glimmer. Anaconda grins.
(narrator) Everyone smiled wide.
(describer) The animals smile in different circles. The three snails, Dolphin, two eels, the piranhas, Dogfish, and Anaconda.
(narrator) Stand up for others. Think about your words. Respect and include everyone. Stick with your friends. Talk about your feelings. Tell a trusted adult. It's easy to spread kindness by what we say and do. Respect one another. It all starts with you!
(describer) Dogfish stands below a rainbow and holds an eel and an otter in different fins. They grin. On the rainbow: "Stand up for others," "Think about your words," "Respect and include everyone," "Stick with your friends," "Talk about your feelings," "Tell a trusted adult." A map depicts North and South America. A red X marks where Dogfish lives in Santa Monica Bay and a dotted red line moves south along the coast of Mexico. It crosses the Panama Canal in the middle of Central America, then goes east over the northern coast of South America until it reaches the entrance to the Amazon River where he meets Dolphin.
