Dark stage with dancers dressed in lilac and blue garments in a circular formation, their long blue and lilac sleeves billowing high up in the air.

Long sleeve dance in China first started appearing during the Zhou Dynasty period (1046 to 256 BCE). However, it was during the Ming Dynasty (1368 to 1644 CE) that long sleeve garments came to symbolize water and became known as water sleeves. Initially, the water sleeves were made of regular cloth. But soon, silk was preferred. This episode highlights some of the famous long sleeve dance routines. Part of "The Heritage of Chinese Culture and Dance" series.
