Ben, a rebellious young African American, mysteriously finds himself trapped in the past with Harriet Tubman. He experiences life with her as a slave on a Maryland plantation. After the master dies, Harriet and Ben run toward freedom, using the Underground Railroad to help them escape to Pennsylvania. Ben discovers dreams and courage and purpose in his life as he returns to his own time.
