From infancy through childhood, math can be learned anywhere and at any time. Young children are constantly exploring the world around them, and by providing some basic opportunities, you can ensure they develop a love of learning from the very beginning. Here are some ways you can incorporate math into your child's everyday life. To teach measurement and comparison, have math conversations about objects in your house. Recognize that one object is larger than another and make simple comparisons between the two objects. A tape measure makes a great inexpensive toy for young children and gives them exposure to numerals, fractions, and the concept of measurement. To help with geometry and spatial relations, match identical shapes by using shape sorters or simple shape puzzles. Point out familiar shapes you can see in your home and neighborhood. Understand some directional words; top and bottom. Follow directions using directional words. "Put the toy in the box." To teach numbers gather a collection of objects, balls, plastic shapes, small stuffed animals, and use these for counting and sorting objects. Moving objects out of groups changes the number in the group. Know that adding objects to a collection is more. Know that taking away objects is less. To work on number concepts say several numbers but not necessarily in order. Understand the meaning of numbers one and two. Understand when one collection has more than another. To teach time, use an hourglass timer or a visual timer and time how long it takes to do some tasks and make the connection that it takes longer to do some tasks than others. Learning math starts in infancy and continues every day, and by combining these tools and allowing your child to explore their world, you can instill a love of math from the very beginning.
