So, Ace, I've been wondering about something. Does it have to do with broadcast engineering? I might not be much help. Well, we get assignments from the Office of the Alphabet, research careers, and then write up reports to share with kids. Yep, that's what it says in the Career Lab Handbook. But, like, how does that happen? How does the word about these careers get out to kids everywhere? Huh, I never thought about that. Maybe some sort of... Magical elves? I was gonna say "mass communication," but that's a lot more fun.
(girl) Knock-knock? Jody? From headquarters? Whoa! How'd you get here? Magic? Oh, I don't need magic. I've got a bus pass. Nice! So what brings you here today, Jody? Everything okay at HQ? Yeah, everything's super. I heard you have questions about communications, so I thought I'd help you out. Are there hidden cameras around here? Do you know the answer to Riley's question about getting the word out? Yes, and that leads to another exciting career. Are you ready for research? No problem. And teamwork? Piece of cake. Great. Let's get to work.

Hi, Jason. Hey, Lab Squad. Great being here. Jason, can you tell us what you do as a marketing manager? To me, marketing is a way of promoting something, of explaining it to somebody on an everyday basis. It's really showing why that either object, person, or place is special. I love it because I get to talk to people all the time. I work with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources' Communications office. I do media relations, special events, I do social media, I write press releases. I get to talk to people like you, your family, at different shows and really market our department. It sounds like communications is a major part of your job. What tools do you use? One of the biggest is social media: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest. These are great tools to use to market to people exactly what you do daily. Jason, what's your favorite part of your job? The favorite thing, really, with my job is talking to people and showing them things they might not see every day. Today I have a special friend I take to events. This is a black rat snake.
(Describer) He holds it.
This guy I use to educate people about how beneficial snakes are. A lot of people are afraid of snakes, but, actually, they're pretty awesome. I hope you get to experience one one day. Nature is so awesome. It sells itself. I love it. It sounds like your job is a lot of fun. Do you have challenges? What's the coolest thing you market, aside from snakes? The most challenging part of my job, for sure, is multitasking. I have to balance a lot of different things every day. To do that effectively, I have to list things and multitask. The coolest thing that I market is the Natural Resources Park at the Ohio State Fair. It's an eight-acre park with fishing, kayaking, Smokey Bear, who knows your name, a fire tower. It's so much fun and there's so many great things to do. It makes me smile to see a kid in a kayak, or another kid who catches a bluegill. That's the most rewarding and best thing I market. Jason, marketing is obviously a passion for you. Thanks for sharing it with us today. Thanks for visiting with me today. I hope you learned about marketing. And I hope you take time to make your own experiences and make lasting memories in nature.
