(Describer) Title: Teen Kids News Top Story.

(female narrator) This report is brought to you by a grant from...

(Describer) In an animation, someone draws a boy with a speech bubble that says “tobacco”, then a Stop sign over three cigarettes, and a girl with a speech bubble saying, “Just not cool.”

      (Describer) Katie:

Smoking is not only dangerous to the person puffing on the cigarette, cigar, or pipe. Nonsmokers need to be aware of "secondhand smoke." Secondhand smoke is when somebody's smoking near you. You are able to observe and breathe it. That's correct. To be clear, there are two types of tobacco smoke.

      (Describer) Chris Carroll:

Firsthand smoke is the effect of the cigarette you are smoking. Secondhand smoke is someone else's cigarette.

(Katie) Just like firsthand smoke, secondhand smoke can be deadly. It kills a lot of people. It's harmful to breathe in.

(Carroll) Cigarette smoke contains more than 250 chemicals that are toxic and potentially poisonous. That is stuff that you're getting into your body either through firsthand or secondhand smoking. The dangers of secondhand smoke are real.

      (Describer) Deepa Camenga:

You can have health problems from secondhand smoke from being around friends who smoke, in a car with people who smoke, anywhere being exposed to smoke. If one of your parents is smoking in a room, and you get the smoke in your... it can go to your lungs too.

(Katie) In fact, here's an interesting statistic from the 2013 Connecticut Youth Tobacco Survey. Middle and high school students were asked if during the past seven days they were exposed to secondhand smoke. The best way to deal with secondhand smoke is avoid it, especially in an enclosed space, like a room or car. After all, you don't want your future to go up in smoke. For "Teen Kids News," I'm Katie.
