Introduction to Vocational Rehabilitation

8 minutes

Vocational Rehabilitation, also know as Voc Rehab, is a government service that's offered to assist people with disabilities who wish to find meaningful work that suits their capabilities. The goal of this service is to help people develop the skills, the abilities, the motivation, and attitude that will allow them to be successful in finding, getting, and keeping a job. There is certainly a Voc Rehab office in your area that is ready to assist you in determining your eligibility for services. And this is determined according to a number of criteria. If you do qualify for Voc Rehab services, they will help you develop a plan for finding a worthwhile career. It is, however, up to you to take the initiative to go in and see what services they have that can be of assistance to you. If you think that you may qualify for Voc Rehab services and you want to access their services to help you find a job, then you must first locate and contact your local Voc Rehab office. It isn't hard to find your local Voc Rehab office. You can go online to find the website, as well as contact information for the main Voc Rehab office in your state. And from there you can refer to a listing of the local offices in your area. We do have a supporting document that explains how you can find your local Voc Rehab office. If you go online to the PEPNet website, you'll look for the Getting a Job video series. And by clicking on that, you'll see a link to Supporting Documents. And within those Supporting Documents, you'll find a title Looking for Your Local Voc Rehab Office, and this will help you find the office that's closest to you. During your initial contact with Voc Rehab, one of the important things they'll be doing is determining your eligibility for the services that they provide. And an important thing to remember about Voc Rehab services is that while it is provided for people with disabilities, it is not an entitlement program. Therefore, just because you have a disability, it doesn't mean that you're necessarily guaranteed to receive services, and you could be denied services. Aside from eligibility, you should know that all Voc Rehab offices handle communication differently. In some offices there are deaf counselors with whom you can communicate directly. In other Voc Rehab offices there are no deaf counselors, in which case, they would hire an interpreter to facilitate communication. In order to apply for Voc Rehab services, you must submit a written application. And sometimes Voc Rehab will request additional information, such as your employment and educational history or evidence of a disability. Voc Rehab will then, within 60 days, determine whether or not you are eligible to receive services. Voc Rehab has specific requirements that they look to when accepting new clients. If you receive SSI or SSDI benefits, you are eligible to receive Voc Rehab services. Nonetheless, even if you meet the Voc Rehab eligibility guidelines, that doesn't mean that it is guaranteed that you will receive Voc Rehab services. Sometimes there are many people applying for Voc Rehab services, but there's limited funding for those services. And when that happens, Voc Rehab sets into place a unique process. This process is called the Order of Selection. Under the Order of Selection, an individual with the most significant disability and who qualifies for Voc Rehab services would be provided with services on a priority basis, followed by individuals with less significant disabilities. In the end, this means that an individual with more significant disability is provided services first. Voc Rehab offers a variety of services designed to help people develop the skills, the abilities, the motivation, and attitude that will allow them to be successful in finding, getting, as well as keeping a job. To see specific examples of the services provided in your area, you should visit the website of your local Voc Rehab agency, or you can make an appointment to meet with a Voc Rehab counselor in person. And when working with Voc Rehab, a customized plan will be developed to fit your individual needs and employment interests. So don't wait. You should contact your local Voc Rehab office, and start working now towards finding that new career.
