1 minute

(child) Do you know what a magnet is? Magnets stick to some things, like refrigerators. But not others, like puppies. Let's experiment to see what'll stick to a magnet and what won't. We'll chart our results. Do you think the Slinky will stick to a magnet?

(Describer) A magnet is held to a metal Slinky.

It sticks!

(Describer) The magnet pulls it away.

What about this apple?

(Describer) The magnet moves close to it.

It doesn't stick. How about these sequins? They don't stick either. Let's try some nails. They stick! Do you think this glass beaker will stick to a magnet? It doesn't stick. What about these pom-poms? They don't stick either. Let's try these cookie cutters.

(Describer) They’re metal.

They stick! Let's look at our chart. Why do you think some items stuck and some items didn't? It looks like things that are metal stuck to our magnet. Magnets are attracted to some metals, but not all. Look around you.
