All About the Holidays: Father's Day

2 minutes

(male narrator) The third Sunday in June is Father's Day, a day to celebrate all dads, grandpas, and father figures. Celebrating Father's Day was inspired from Mother's Day. It was a Mother's Day sermon in 1909 that inspired a woman named Sonora Smart Dodd to celebrate fathers. Mrs. Dodd's father was a widower and Civil War veteran who raised six children by himself in Spokane, Washington. She believed dads also deserved a day of honor. Mrs. Dodd asked local preachers to celebrate Father's Day in June of 1910. Then the governor proclaimed the third Sunday in June as a statewide holiday. Unlike Mother's Day, Father's Day took more than 60 years to become a national holiday. Fathers got their recognition when, in 1972, President Richard Nixon officially established Father's Day. Today Father's Day is celebrated in many ways. Kids make homemade cards, help cook meals, or give gifts to their fathers. How does your family celebrate Father's Day?
