Reenactments and archival footage chronicle the struggle to build the Panama Canal--a series of locks and dams that lifts ships over mountains in order to provide quicker naval access from the Atlantic to the Pacific. Recounts problems of temperature, logistics, and disease (such as yellow fever) that faced the workers. The canal opened in 1914. Narrated by Leonard Nimoy.
