In the summer of 1781, General Natanael Greene had his military engineer, Thaddeus Kosciuszko, devise a plan to build a tunnel underneath the Star Fort. This tunnel was dug in the subsurface soil by Patriot soldiers from the American lines toward the British. The plan was to place explosives in the tunnel.
