All right, everybody, drop your backpacks off inside and meet back here for A.B.'s sound of the day. Okay, everyone, we're racing the clock. Let's go! Uh, Dust, that means you, too.
[children laugh]
Right. Hey, stop! Wait for me! And you! Come on.
[fanfare, drumroll]
(Describer) A fence pops up with a sign: 'Act One.' Then a curtain rises to reveal a garden with two gnomes.
[applause]
[cheering]
Hello, Reading Buddies! I'm Marty, the garden gnome, and this is Mary. Say hello, Mary. "Hello Mary"! We're here to give you...
(all) "The Fancy Shmancy Word of the Day!" We're gonna give you a fancy word, and tell you what it means. Drumroll, please. Yaabadabba dabba dabba! Today word is: "Comment"! Let's say it together! "Comment" on three. One, two, three--
(both) "Comment!" "Comment" means expressing your opinion about something. Hey! The Alphabotteers are coming back! See ya later, alligator! In a while, crocodile.
(Dott) Freeze!
(Describer) In a window, a megaphone pops out of Alphabott the robot.
[military march playing]
[Alphabott squealing]
You know what that means! It's time for Alphabott's sound of the day!
(Alphabott) "Aw, aw, aw."
(all) "Aw, aw, aw"! That's a fun sound, A.B. "Aw," like in octopus. Today, you're going to help Dusty earn "The o Closed Syllable Badge."
(all) Oooh! Let's explore this sound a little more. A.B., please show us what our mouth does when we make the "aw" sound.
[beeping]
When we make the "aw" sound, your mouth is open with your jaw down, and your tongue feels like it's laying down in the bottom of your mouth. Your voice box is on.
[beeping]
Repeat after me. "Aw, aw, aw."
(all) "Aw, aw, aw." A.B., let's show them when the letter "o" is "aw" in words.
[squealing]
(Describer) Alphabott shows the word: 'mop,' spelled m-o-p.
[dinging]
"Mop." This word is a closed syllable-- there is just one vowel, and that vowel is closed in by a consonant. The vowel sound will be short, kind of like it's anxious that the consonant is closing it in. So "o" represents "aww." Let's read it together. Mm, aww, pp. Mop!
[Alphabott squealing]

(Describer) As the kids head inside, Dusty sneaks away.
I'm not here, I'm not here. Not so fast, Dust. Whoa! Dott! You were right there, huh? Did you clean your doghouse this morning? Oh, Dott, my room is spotless. Not! Will you help me clean up all that junk?
(children) Yes! Hot Dog! Race ya there. Ready, set, go!
(Describer) Dusty trips through a door and appears in a cartoon bedroom with a talking pile of stuff.
[panting]
Hmm? Gaah!
(singer) ♪ Dog dog doggy dog ♪
♪ Doggy dog dog doghouse ♪
A, E, I, O, U win again! Ha ha! Okay, let's sort out this junk. Today, let's set aside things that have the "aw" sound somewhere in their name. Remember-- "aw" like octopus.
(junk pile) My name's Dusty! I'm a dog that forgot to clean my room! Wait a minute, are you mocking me? That's it! Dive! Dive! Dive!
[grunting]
(Describer) He digs in the pile.
[whistles, quacks] Duck!
Duh, uu, kk. Does duck have the "aw" sound?
(child) No, Dusty! Nope! It was a mighty duck.
Quack! Quack! [quacking]
[grunting]
[whistles] Pot!
Puh, aw, tt. Does pot have the "aw" sound?
(child) Yes! Yeah! Ooh, now I need some flowers!
[grunting]
[splashing] Otter.
"Aw, tt, rr." Does otter have the "aw" sound?
(child) Yes! Ha! Yes! I hope otters like socks!
(junk pile) Noooooo! See ya tomorrow, Dusty! See ya tomorrow, Junk! Hey! Thanks for helping me clean all that up. Now, let's get out of here and get some fresh air! Woof!
[dog howls]
(Describer) Outside, Dusty finds Jampa sitting beside his camera and scrapbook.
[upbeat banjo playing]
Hmm. Hi, Jampa! Oh, hi, Dusty. Woah, is that a new picture for your scrapbook? Yeah! What's that a picture of? A box! A box? I've heard of that. Hey, Jampa? What? Does that box fly? No, Dusty! Oh, no! Well, what do you do with a box? You can put something inside. Oh, you can put something inside. Hey, Jampa, what would you put inside a box? A present! A present? Ooh ooh ooh, for who? Dott! Yeah, yeah, um, me too, me too. I'd give Dott a present, yeah. Thanks for sharing your scrapbook with me. Bye, Dusty. Bye, Jampa!
[banjo strumming]
(Describer) He shuts his scrapbook, titled, 'Jampa's Adventures.' Now, Dusty looks out the window as a mailperson delivers mail.
Bark! Bark! Bark! Bark! Thanks, Bruce. Ha ha! The mail's here.
(Describer) Dusty runs outside and trips.
Woah! I'm okay!
[panting]
Finally! I hope I got it! I hope I got it. Haha, here we go! If I could just.. Right. No thumbs. Maybe if I hop on up there, I can get the mail! Ooh! Falling!
[child laughing] Uh, Dusty?
You're acting a little odder than usual today. What's going on? Oh, hey, Cosmo! Perfect, I could use a little help. The new issue of my favorite comic book, "Doctor Comet... Comet... Comet" was supposed to get here four days ago! I'd be shocked if it didn't come today.
(Describer) Cosmo opens the mailbox.
It didn't come today.
I'm shocked! [sighs]
Oh, I'm sorry, Dusty. Maybe it got lost in the mail? Lost? This is a cosmic disaster! I think I can help, but I'm gonna need a few more details. Okay. What do you like about this comic book? Oh, what's not to like? There's a rocket ship and a robot, and a doctor who rides a comet! Stop right there! I've got everything I need. Need for what?
(child) Dusty! It's snack time! Where are you? You better get along, little doggy. Oh, okay. See ya later, Cosmo! See ya. I've got a job to do.
(Describer) He writes notes. In the yard, Ziggy paints on Alphabott's screen.
[funky music]
Hmm. Hey, Alphabott's in art mode! Come on, let's see what they're up to.
Woah! [children laugh]
(Describer) He trips, then hurries over.
[squealing]
Every day's a great day when you're drawing, right, Alphabott?
[squealing]
Hi, A.B. Hi, Ziggy. What are you drawing today? I was at the beach, painting on the dock, when I saw this resting on a rock! Wow, Ziggy. That is a great octopus! Yeah, thanks. Hey, Ziggy, do you know what else I see? What? The letter "o"! Our Alphabadge? Dott, I spot it too!
[Dusty grunting] Well, I don't!
That's not a letter, it's an octopus. Don't worry, we've got you, Dust. Will you help us show Dusty the "o" in this octopus?
(children) Yeah! Great! We'll need our magic paintbrush. Now, I know I put mine around here somewhere. Oh, I remember now.
Boop! (children) Oooh!
(Describer) She pulls an invisible paint brush from Alphabott.
First things first. We need this!
(Describer) Writing lines.
Now we need Ziggy's octopus.
[whistling]
(Describer) She moves it to the writing lines.
(Ziggy) O, octopus, "aw"! Let's start between the dotted and the bottom line. Now, a counter-clockwise circle to the left. Done! That's the letter "o."
(Ziggy) O, octopus, "aw"! You can see so much in art. Woah! I have to rinse out my brushes. See ya later, painter! I really think I'm gonna get that "o Closed syllable Badge"! Honestly, Dust, I think you will, too, with your help, of course. A.B., switch into learning mode, please.
[buzzing]
(Describer) Alphabott rocks back and forth. She pulls in her arms, and her head spins above her robot body.
[Alphabott whirring, clanking]
[upbeat music]
[children cheering]

[upbeat music]
(Describer) They head inside as Alphabott's screen counts down from six, and a title appears: 'alpha shorts.' A lowercase letter o floats in, then turns into an octopus.
[numbers beeping]
(Dott) O, octopus, "aw." O, octopus, "aw." O, octopus, "aw."
[applause]
(Describer) A gameshow title spins over a box: 'Where Is It?'
[game-show theme music]
[children cheering]

(Describer) Host Dott wears glasses and holds a microphone, and Dusty wears a name tag.
Welcome back to...
(all) "Where Is It?" The game show where you have to listen for a sound in a word. I'm your host, Dott! You all know our champion, Dusty! Hi, Oscar! I'm on TV! Today, you're listening for the "aw" sound. It's up to you to tell us where the sound is in each word. Here we go. The first word is... "odd."
(Describer) Three squares appear.
Odd. Aw, dd. Where is "aw" in "aw, dd"?
(children) The first sound! Okay! Let's do the first sound, Dott! A.B. says...
[whirring] [applause]
(Describer) She shows the first square.
Ding, ding, ding! Yes! Let's add another square. Oooh! The next word is "dock." Dock. Duh, aw, kk. Where is "aw" in "duh, aw, kk"?
(child) The middle sound! Are you sure? Okay. The middle sound!
[beeping] That's right!
The last word is... "knob." Knob. Nn, aw, bb. Where is "aw" in "nn, aw, bb"?
(children) The middle sound! Ho! You heard 'em! The middle! A.B. says...
[squealing, beeping]
Ding ding! And that sound means you win! You've won a lifetime supply of mops! Join us next time, when we'll be listening for a different sound!
[all cheering]
(Describer) Outside, Dusty wears headphones and a sweatband.
Get ready to "Squat with Dott!"
[upbeat music]
(Describer) She warms up with Kitt and Cosmo.
We're just getting our steps in. Hey, do you want to stand up and move with us? Yeah, come on! You got this! Great! Be sure to listen for that "aw" sound while you exercise. What's up first, Dott? Our first move is called "The Tick Tock." Okay, here we go!
(Describer) She moves her arm in a circle.
The Tick Tock. Come on, the Tick Tock. That's good! The Tick Tock... and stop! How about this, Dott? I call it "the Hop Scotch." Ooh! I know how to do that.
(Describer) She jumps on one foot, then two.
Okay, Lets try it with Kitt. Here we go-- the Hop Scotch, the Hop Scotch. Hey, that's great! The Hop Scotch... and stop! How about this one? I call it... "The Rag Doll." Haha, Cosmo, that's great.
(Describer) He wiggles his arms and legs.
Let's all do the Rag Doll. Here we go! The Rag Doll! Come on, the Rag Doll! One more time, the Rag Doll... and stop! Great workout, everyone! In the pocket, really! Haha, it really was! I felt that. Did you? Yeah, you nailed it. You?
[soft music]
(Describer) In a bubble bath, Dusty holds a scrub brush.
Woof! That workout made me sweat. Woah! Look at all of these bubbles. Let's get popping!
[bubbles pop]
(Describer) Two bubbles appear, then become one.
(Dott) Hip, hop. Hip hop.
(Dusty) Ha! Woah! Tiny bubbles! Sh, ah, pp.
(Describer) Now, bubbles with letters:
Shop! Ha! Tt, ah, pp. Top! Woohoo!
(Describer) Dusty slips across the bathroom floor.
Hmm. Woah, woah, woaaah!
[fanfare, drumroll]
(Describer) A fence pops up: 'Act Two.' In the garden, Mary plays a trumpet.
[blowing trumpet]
Oh, hi, Reading Buddies. I was just practicing my trumpet! Do you have any "comments" about my music, Marty? Comments? You mean my opinion of your trumpet music? Yeah! No comment. You must have something to say about it. Okay, here's a comment. That music was played on a trumpet. Okay, let's...
[alarm sound blaring]
Any more comments about my music, Marty? Yes. That music was very easy for me to hear! Well, now that that's over...
[blaring]
I play good and loud because I don't want you to miss any notes. Oh, don't worry, Mary! I've got a ton of notes. I love playing the trumpet for you, Marty. It just makes me so happy. But you're probably sick of it. Thanks for listening. Mary! I have one more comment about your music. What is it, Marty? I would love to hear more! You mean it? Ohhh! This one's dedicated to my best friend, Marty. A one and a two!
[blaring]
(Describer) Marty dances with corks in his ears.
"Comment!" To express your opinion about something! Way to go, Mary!
[blaring] (children) Yeah, Bravo, woohoo!
(Describer) The curtain closes as Jampa tosses daisies and claps.
(child) Bravo, bravo, bravo! Bravo, bravo.
[funky music]
(Describer) Inside, Dott dries Dusty off.
Dusty loves his baths. Maybe I should have been a frog instead of a dog.
[Alphabott whirring, buzzing]
(Describer) Alphabott spins over.
Perfect timing, A.B.! It's time to transform some words with the sound of the day in them. Alphabott, would you please give us our letters?
[buzzing]
(Describer) Letters f, o, and g.
Okay, let's read what we have here. Ff, aw, gg. Fog. Time to use those dog ears. What sound is in the middle of "ff, aw, gg"? A.B.'s sound of the day? "Aw," like in octopus! It's what we in the biz call a closed syllable! Oh, wow! Showing off. Now, let's take away the g-- "gg," and transform ff, aw, gg into ff, aw, cks. What do we have to add to the end? Ff, aw, cks. Change it so "cks" is at the end? Yes! We get rid of the "g" and we add "x." "Cks." Now, let's transform ff, aw, cks into "aw, cks." Aw, cks. I don't think we need the "ff." Take it away so we have a simple "o" closed syllable there!
(Dott) Very good. Now can you transform ah, cks into ah, cks? Aw, cks. Aah, cks. I hear it! We have to get rid of "aah" and make the first sound "ah." The letter "a"! Yes, we add the letter "a." Aah, cks. Ax! You transformed all those words, Dust! Thanks, A.B.!
[sad buzzing]
(Describer) She closes her eyes.
Oh, Alphabott's battery must be drained. She's been helping us out so much today. Hey, Dusty, could you take her to Reggie for a quick charge? Sure. Hey, do you want to come with us?
(children) Okay! Ha ha! Great! Come on, Alphabott, let's go!
[squealing]
[thumping]
(Describer) Dusty brings Alphabott out to the yard.
[sighs]
Uh, hey, Reggie! Would you mind giving A.B. a quick charge? Oh, of course, Dusty. Oh! Hey, Reading Buddies! Come on in.
[music playing]
(Describer) He pushes a button on a remote, and lights flash on the camper. Bubbles float past, and the camper opens up. It has tools, a lab, and a Space Camp Fund chart.

(Describer) Reggie invites them in, and smoke drifts up from Alphabott.
Wowie Zowie, her battery is drained! Could you help charge Alphabott's battery?
(children) Yeah! We can do it! Okay, for every sound we hear in a word, we have to press a button. After a few rounds, Alphabott will be fully charged. Let's get to work!
[whirring]
(Alphabott) Odd.
(Dusty) Odd. The word is "odd." How many sounds do you hear in "ah, dd"?
(children) Two!
(Dusty) Let's see. "Ah-dd! Odd!"
[whirring]
(Reggie) Wowwie zowwie!
(Alphabott) Shop.
(Dusty) Shop. The word is "shop." How many sounds are in "sh-ah-pp"?
(child) Three!
(Dusty) Three? Let's see! Sh, ah, pp. Shop!
(Reggie) Halfway there, Buddies!
(Alphabott) Fog.
(Dusty) Fog. The word is "fog." How many sounds are in "ff, aw, gg"?
(children) Three!
(Dusty) Three? Ff, aw, gg. Fog!
(Reggie) Impressive.
(Alphabott) Knock.
(Dusty) Knock. The word is "knock." How many sounds are in "nn, aw, kk"?
(child) Three!
(Dusty) Three? Let's see. "Nn, aw, kk." Knock!
(Reggie) She's fully charged!
[upbeat music, cheering]
Great work, Reading Buddies! That'll be ten cents, Dusty. Ten cents toward the "Get Reggie to Space Camp Fund." Thanks, Reg. Aw, thanks, Dust.
[happy beeping]
(children) Awww.
(Describer) Now, a heart reveals letters o and f.
(Dott) Today's heart word is "of," as in "Dusty is a friend of mine."
(Dusty) Awww! "Of" rhymes with glove!
(Dott) "Of" is a heart word, which means it has one or more sound spellings we may not know yet. Of has two sounds-- "uh, vv." The "o" spells the "uh" sound, and the "f" spells the "vv" sound. We have to know both of these parts by heart. Let's read it together.
"Uh, vv." (all) Of!
(Describer) Outside:
Dusty, I solved your comic-book problem! You did? Yes. I've got something for you. My comic! Well, not exactly. I mean, it's for you, but I wrote it. You did? Ziggy helped with the pictures. I call it "The Odd Cosmic Adventures of Captain Fleabag and Doctor Betabott"! Wait. Captain Fleabag? That's me! I'm on a comic book. You're in a comic book. Huh?
(Describer) Cosmo shows him.
[gasps]
I took what you liked-- robots, rockets, doctors, and space, and put it all into this comic book. Oh, thank you, Cosmo! You're a great writer! Thank you! You know what? Maybe I'll make a few more!
[gasps] A whole series!
With the option for a movie. Ha ha! I can see it now--- "Cosmo's Comics." It practically writes itself! No, it doesn't. You have to write it. Come on hop to it! Onward! Blast off! Excelsior! Ooh, write these down! These are good! Haha ! Um um um, Space, Spacey Mcgee. No, that's not great. That one's not great... But you'll come up with some better stuff.
[upbeat music]
(Describer) Later:
And you, Dusty, you've earned your new Alphabadge, "The o Closed Syllable Badge." Wear it with pride.
[fanfare]
(Describer) She puts it on his vest.
[applause]
I'm in shock! Little by little.
