(narrator) Writers thrive in fun spaces that are accessible and inviting. Create a special writer's space for your emerging writer. This writer's space can be a desk, a table, a corner of a room, or even a portable writing desk or box. A writer's space is that special place to write.
(Describer) Text appears.
Have writing tools readily available, such as paper, notebooks, pencils, pens, crayons, scissors, and a stapler. Check out local discount stores to find plain notebooks that your child can personalize with stickers. Get some fun gel pens, and cute erasers, and even sticky notes for your young writer to use while writing. Be creative and use recycled materials for writing. Save printed papers that have plain backs for children to use to jot ideas down for writing. Use paper bags to make paper bag books. Recycled envelopes can hold some great written messages from your child, and pictures from recycled magazines can be used to spark creativity or as illustrations for a story. Lighting is important in the writer's space too. Make sure that there is enough light for your writer. Another important part of a writer's space is the noise level. Is your writer's space away from distractions such as television? If not, think about moving the writer's space to a quieter area where your writer won't have to compete with distractions when trying to write. Does your writer need help to begin writing? Check out these PBS writing apps.
