(Describer) In a dirt lot, heavy machinery sits parked near a heap of broken concrete. A construction worker stands on scaffolding next to a cement wall, while three other workers perform tasks on the ground. Several men wearing hard-hats assemble a rectangular structure from ten-foot, metal I-beams . High above a street, three men in boom lifts work on unfinished windows. Lifts, trucks, and materials line the floor of an ice rink under construction. A title: Construction Technology.

♪
(narrator) We live in a rapidly advancing world where constructing new buildings and structures is becoming increasingly necessary. Construction technology continues to advance and expand to meet the needs of industry, commerce, and society. This rapidly growing field continues to offer career opportunities in various trades, including ironworkers, electricians, and heavy equipment operators.
♪
(Describer) Inside a building, piles of steel framing studs lie on the floor. A word appears: Ironworker.
Ironworkers play a huge part in the construction process. They work for contractors in sectors including structural, reinforcing, ornamental, rigging and machinery moving, and welding. Ironwork is a challenging and physically demanding career. Ironworkers often work on tall structures, whether it be a bridge or a building, and play a huge role in the construction of our cities.
(Describer) From above, a freight train passes beneath a street-bridge under construction. Two workers use tie-wire to lash narrow lengths of steel reinforcing-bar, or rebar , into a grid pattern. A man sits on a horizontal I-beam, bolting it to a vertical one in front of him. In a boom-lift basket, two men arrange electrical conduit pipes near a ceiling.
♪
Electricians are crucial to powering our homes and businesses. They play a major role in ensuring the structures we build have proper wiring and meet electrical requirements. Electricians specialize in different sectors, including commercial, industrial, alternative energy, instrumentation, residential, and voice-data-video.
♪
(Describer) Near a ceiling, a man arranges flexible electrical conduit tubings in a junction box, fitting plastic caps, or "wire nuts," over their ends. Workers maneuver a boom lift carrying two men.
Heavy equipment operators are important in the construction industry. They are often seen building roads, bridges, dams, and assist in building other structures.
♪
(Describer) Behind a low, cement road barrier, two backhoes lower their buckets toward the ground while street traffic rushes past the barrier. A bulldozer pushes earth outside a cement structure.
Heavy equipment operators are trained to safely operate heavy equipment such as bulldozers, motor graders, backhoes, pavers, and cranes. This field requires creative individuals who like to work outdoors. Like most construction technology careers, heavy equipment operators have the potential to earn a decent wage.
♪
(Describer) Behind a chain-link fence, a demolition backhoe scrapes rubble off a crumbling building, dropping piles of construction materials onto the ground. At the ice rink, a tall crane lifts an I-beam into place as workers install the roof.
The construction technology field is a growing field with many opportunities for people looking for in-demand careers. Careers in construction technology are always evolving with modern technology and new building practices. These careers offer attractive wages, benefits packages, and retirement plans and can be very rewarding. Without ironworkers, electricians, and heavy equipment operators, structures such as stadiums, bridges, and museums would not exist. When driving down the road or visiting a city, construction technology workers and their families can enjoy and experience the magnificence of the structures they built.

(Describer) From above, a suspension bridge overlooks waterfront buildings along a river. On the future ice rink, construction workers tie steel rebar over a layer of pink insulation material. At the edge of the rink, two men connect refrigerant hoses to plastic fittings. As concrete flows onto a floor through a large hose, four construction workers use rake-like "screeds" and a long 2x4 wooden board to level the concrete across the surface. A man operates a tile saw as another man lays 12-by-12-inch tiles across a floor. Atop the I-beam construction, a man guides a diagonal, structural-support bar into place. In a boom-lift basket, another man connects a steel I-beam with a large bolt and nut. A backhoe digs. Behind an unfinished wall of steel framing studs, sparks fly from a welder's torch.
