Young girl wearing a bright blue t-shirt speaks to camera while standing on a suburban street. Caption. Hi, my name is Ava Bullis.

Ava is a fifth grader, and she loves reading, playing sports, and spending time with her friends. She has Usher syndrome type 1, which has affected her sight and hearing. In the summer of 2016, her family moved to a new home, and Ava had to change schools, which caused her family concern. Her mom is the Family Engagement Coordinator for the New Jersey Consortium on Deaf-Blindness, and she contacted Ava’s new school and created a plan to make Ava’s transition a success. Part of the “Families Matter” series.
