Closeup from the side of a young boy next to an older man with orange flowers in the background. The boy holds a candle next to other lit candles. Caption. I'm sure I'll remember this moment forever.

Part of the "My Brand New Life" series. A Canadian boy, Alexis, and a Mexican boy, Alejandro, trade places on Halloween and the Day of the Dead. Both festive occasions seem to have much in common on the surface-things like ghosts, skeletons, and the dead-but as each boy learns, the events are really not similar at all. One youngster will experience a day of fun and mischief, while the other experiences a day of spiritual celebration.

This video helped ALL students in my classroom, those with needs and without, to understand the difference between the Day of the Dead and Halloween; the CC captioning helped my ELL's and Resource students; while the video itself helped clarify misconceptions for ALL students. It also helped them engage in discourse which can be difficult for ELL's and those on the spectrum. I really enjoyed seeing them so involved with their learning.

A Great example to give to my students of why they should sign up for DCMP at home and watch. Fifth grade was fascinated with the two boys switching homes. I used the time to also re-enforce how important it is to actually read the captions rather than watch the images only and guess at the details.

Simple, straightforward presentation of Day of the Dead and Halloween celebrations. Great for compare/contrast essays.
