Shares the experiences of several families who have struggled to love and care for children who are at various points on the spectrum of autism. Teaches about the symptoms which first alerted families to the possibility of a developmental disorder in their children, the challenges they faced in obtaining an accurate diagnosis, and problems securing proper treatment and educational settings appropriate to their children's needs. Discusses the perspectives of clinicians and educators who explain the difficulties they face in recognizing autism, and points to some common developmental signs that may be early signals of the disorder.
